- What is the Harris License Administrator Tool (HLA)?
The Harris License Administrator (HLA) tool is a GUI which allows ENVI and IDL users to manage their licenses. It was introduced in versions IDL 8.6 and ENVI 5.4. It is installed automatically when installing ENVI or IDL
Note: The HLA GUI is NOT available when only installing the license server utility
- How to start the ENVI License Administrator Tool (HLA)?
Administrator/sudo/root privileges are mandatory to run the HLA.
- Windows: From the Start menu, select Harris License Administrator under the shortcut group for your product installation of ENVI x.x or IDL x.x.
- Linux: From a terminal window, launch the harrislicense command from the INSTALL_DIR/envixx/idlxx/bin directory.
- Mac: From a Finder window, double-click the LicenseAdminstrator.app icon located under the INSTALL_DIR/envixx/idlxx directory.
- How to activate/deactivate a local license from the HLA?
An internet connection is required to activate/deactivate a local license from HLA.

- How to activate/deactivate a server license from the HLA?
An internet connection is required to activate/deactivate a server license from the HLA.
Note: The activation/deactivation needs to be completed from the license server machine itself, and cannot be completed from a client machine of the license server

By default, the HLA is not available with the license server utility. If you wish to use it to activate/deactivate the licenses on your license server, you will need to install ENVI on IDL on the license server machine, in addition to the license server utility. If ENVI or IDL are not installed on the license server, activation/deactivation will need to be completed in command line mode.

- How to transfer/rehost a license using the HLA?

Server License: the procedure to transfer a server license using the HLA requires
- Install ENVI or IDL on both the original and the new license server machines so the HLA can be started on both
- To deactivate the license from the original server using the option Deactivate License on this Server (See the link below for instructions)
- To activate the license on the new server using the option Activate License on this Server (See the link below for instructions)

- How to connect a machine to a license server using the HLA?
See the link below for the procedure to connect a client machine to a license server. Note that only one server can be connected to a client machine at a time.

- How to Borrow a license using the HLA?
License borrowing allows you to temporarily move a license from a license server to a client machine so it can be used even if the client machine is no longer connected to the license server
It requires to be connected to the license server:

- Click on Borrow Licenses from a Server
- Select the product(s) you want to borrow,
- Define the Borrow time (default is 7 days; maximum is 60 days)
- Define the quantity of licenses to be borrowed (1 by default)
- Click Borrow from Server.
- Afterwards you can disconnect your machine from the server: click on Use License server > Disconnect, and try to run the product for which you borrowed the licenses
If you wish to return the borrowed feature prior the expiration of the borrow time,
- Reconnect the machine to the server
- Click on Borrow Licenses from a Server
- Click on Return all Borrowed licenses
- How to check the available and in-use licenses from the HLA?

- Is it possible to complete an offline license activation using the HLA?
Yes, it is possible to complete an offline activation from the HLA only for local licenses, in case your machine is not connected to internet or if it is in a secured environment.
Offline activation of a license server can only be completed in command line.

- How to troubleshoot license activation issue from the HLA?
If an error occurred during license activation/deactivation
- Select View Log to list the machine details and the error message
- You can then check if the error message is listed in our Error Index
