ENVI and IDL Upgrade FAQ
This article provides quick answers to commonly asked questions about upgrading ENVI and IDL for License Administrators and End Users.

- When I try to activate my license, I get an error saying "ERROR: Activation ID cannot have its copies increased" or “ERROR: Activation ID was denied”. What do I do?

Only licenses under maintenance are eligible for product and license upgrades. If your license is not under current maintenance at the release date, we invite you to contact you sales representative if you wish to benefit from the newer version.

- Do I need to update my license(s) after installing a new version?
Only the main product releases require a license update - i.e. when the first or second element of the product version is changing. For example, an upgrade from 5.5 to 6.0 or an upgrade from 5.5 to 5.6 will require a license update.
For Service Pack releases – i.e. if only the third element of the product version is changing – there is no need to update the license. For example, no license update is required while upgrading from 5.5 to 5.5.1 or from 5.5.2 to 5.5.3.
- How do I know if I am eligible for an upgrade?
License administrators, in charge of a license eligible for the upgrade, will receive an email notification when the new version is available.
If the upgrade requires a new license, an updated activation code will also be delivered to the license administrator
- Where do I download the new versions of ENVI & IDL and license server?
License Administrators will have access to the downloads through the L3Harris Download and License Center:

If you are a license user, please contact your license administrator to request the installation file(s).
- Do I need to uninstall previous versions of ENVI or IDL?
If the new version is a main release: no, you do not need to uninstall previous versions of IDL/ENVI in order to install a new version of our products. They are automatically installed in a separate location than previous versions of IDL and ENVI and will run independently
If the new version is a service pack: yes, uninstallation of the previous version is automatically completed while running the new installer (or you will be asked to uninstall it depending on the product/module)
- How do I update my license to use the new version and features?
Online Local licenses will need to be reactivated using the updated activation code – see link below for local activation instructions

Offline Local licenses will need to be reactivated using the updated binary file based on the new activation code(s) – please contact tech support for guidance and assistance.
Online license servers – i.e. connected to the internet- should be automatically updated to deliver the new version of the products. If this is not the case, you can reactivate the licenses using the updated activation code(s) and the instructions in the links below

- Do I need to upgrade my Flexnet License Server version to work with the new product version?
No. All versions of the Flexnet License Server are currently compatible with the new version. However, you may want to upgrade to the last version of the license server, delivered with the new product version, to benefit from the most up-to-date version of the license server, as well as the most up-to-date SSL security certificate.
Using an out-of-date SSL certificate may prevent the automatic online update of the license server.
- How do I upgrade my license server?

- When I try to activate my license, I get an error saying "ERROR: Activation ID cannot have its copies increased" or “ERROR: Activation ID was denied”. What do I do?
These errors occur when there is a typo in the activation code, or the activation code is no longer valid. Note that your activation code changed to support the new product versions.
If you are a license administrator of L3Harris contracts, check the L3Harris Download and Licensing Center to make sure you are using the most up-to-date activation code for your license : https://harrisgeospatial.flexnetoperations.com/
(or ask the administrator of your license contract to request the most up-to-date activation code if you are a license user)
- Can I transfer my license to a new machine/server while upgrading?
Yes. You will need to follow the standard license transfer process which consists of deactivating and reactivating your licenses.
